Side by Side Gallery is proud to present the online exhibition “From the Rural Community to the City- The Chol ethnic group in Chiapas, Mexico” -photographic works by Refugia Guzmán Pérez, a Ch’ol photographer from the Chiapas Photography Project (CPP) and the Archivo Fotográfico Indígena (AFI) – Chiapas, Mexico.

It pleases all of us involved in the Chiapas Photography Project to share this unique work in process by Refugia Guzmán Pérez.
Refugia conceived of this personal photo project as a way to link the past and present of her family and her Chol community. Since 1997, Refugia has been photographing her family in rural Salto de Agua and urban San Cristóbal de Las Casas. She supplements her vision of her family’s life with the old photographs she was able to collect from family members. Indigenous people in Chiapas rarely have photos from earlier generations, making Refugia’s project a distinct contribution to indigenous art and history. While the project speaks of Refugia’s family’s past, it also speaks of broader issues related to indigenous life and history in Chiapas.
Refugia will continue work on her project by taking more photographs of her family and their way of life. She also hopes to research and create a family tree and interview her family members in order to add a written, narrative element to her art. She is excited to share some of her work at the Side by Side gallery.

Nos complace a todos nosotros involucrados en el Proyecto Fotográfico Chiapas compartir este singular trabajo en proceso por Refugia Guzmán Pérez.
Refugia concibió este proyecto personal fotográfico como una manera de vincular el pasado y el presente de su familia y su comunidad chol. Desde 1997, Refugia ha tomado fotografías de su familia en el pueblo Salto de Agua y la ciudad San Cristóbal de Las Casas. Refugia complementa su visión de la vida de su familia con las antiguas fotografías que ha podido coleccionar de sus familiares. Es poco común que los indígenas de Chiapas tengan fotografías de las generaciones anteriores, lo cual hace el proyecto de Refugia un aporte único al arte e historia indígena. El proyecto no sólo habla del pasado de la familia de Refugia, sino también de cuestiones más amplias relacionadas a la vida e historia indígena de Chiapas.
Refugia sigue trabajando en su proyecto, tomando más fotografías de su familia y su manera de vivir. También espera investigar y crear un árbol genealógico así como entrevistar a sus familiares para añadir un elemento escrito y narrativo a su arte. Está muy emocionada por tener la oportunidad de compartir su trabajo en la galería Side by Side.
