Because its the holiday season, and we have all made it to the end of another year and many are feeling tired and perhaps even burntout, check out this video by Elizabeth Gilbert about nurturing your creativity . A part of my research about practices of collaborative ethnography through creative art involves talking to the facilitators of projects – this year I’ve had the priviledge to interview more than 15 people who facilitate art based documentary work in communities all over the world. In these conversations we frequently end up talking about the trials and tribulations of collaborative art and ethnography; how crazy making it can be to embark on projects that weave together so many strands of creative practice, research, community organising and collaborating with all sorts of people; how easy it is to fall in to burn out; and the common feeling of uncertainty about balancing ones own creative urges with the collaborative creativity we facilitate… I post this video in the hope that everyone keeps doing their creative work, whatever it may be, and give thanks to everyone who’s taken time to reflect and share their experiences with me.

Side by Side Project Galleries is an on-line gallery space featuring works from collaborative art and ethnography projects from around the world, and it has just been launched! Click on the Project Galleries link above to check it out. The first two projects featured are the Photo Me Derby project and the Mowanjum TAFE Youth Projects ‘Faces of Mowanjum’ exhibition. Both of these projects were participatory digital photography projects run in the Derby region of the West Kimberley, in North Western Australia and worked with Indigenous people to make photographic exhibitions about their local communities. More projects from the Kimberley and other parts of the world will be featured over time, so come back and check it out regularly. The galleries also have a comments function, so please leave your comments, reflections and ideas for the project makers and others to consider.

As part of my research project I am going to spend 7 months in Mexico and the USA catching up with various people and projects involved in collaborative art and collaborative ethnography projects… First stop is California, then off to New York City, then on to Mexico… One of the aims of this process is to connect with people doing similar work, and also to get some comparison with what we are doing in Australia, how we talk about it, what happens from the projects that get made. My primary destination will be San Cristobal de las Casas, in Chiapas Mexico, where I hope to work with folks from the Chiapas Indigenous Photography Project, and the AFI, Archivo Fotographico Indigena. You can check out some of their older work at their website. I’ll post here make this journey. Does anyone have any suggestions of projects or people to connect with along the way?

So I’ve set up this blog in aid of my PhD research. In all honesty I started blogging at the encouragement of one of my supervisors. I have also come to think that this blog may be a useful method for all my supervisors, friends, colleagues and family members to keep track, should you choose to read regularly, on what I am doing and thinking while I do this project. The best function of this blog is, potentially, as a point of contact between the various practitioners and projects that I am connecting with in my work, and maybe even some I don’t know about yet. I really hope to hear from others who are interested in similar things, to provoke discussion and to share some images, stories, experiences and reflections. Over time I hope to build up an online curated exhibition of works from a cross section of collaborative art and ethnographic projects around the world. Lets see if we can make this happen…. In starting to blog in earnest I want to declare two things: I have spent WAY too much time learning about wordpress and fiddling with aesthetics etc… it is a distraction from the core of [...]
